Never before has the topic of home improvement been so relevant. After spending weeks in lockdown, we’ve memorized every inch of our living quarters and have added oh-so-many new projects to our lists.
For example, your pantry shelves now need reinforcement to hold the 200 cans you purchased when you thought we’d be quarantined indefinitely. When spring-cleaning out the garage, you came across the dresser you found at a yard sale for $100. Finally, you have the extra time to sand it down and fancy it up with paint and new knobs. And well, how fabulous would it be if you could turn your extra bedroom into a walk-in closet?
These dreams of repair and creation can come true. Here is a list of tools to purchase so you can be your own handyman (or woman.)
Woodworking Tools for DIY Projects
A Circular Saw
A circular saw is a power-saw using a toothed or abrasive disc or blade to cut different materials. It uses a rotary motion that spins around an arbor.
One to consider is the Amazon bestseller SKIL 5280-01 15-Amp 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw with Single Beam Laser Guide for $60. It has a powerful 15-amp motor which translates into greater speed and faster cuts. It also has a dust blower to keep the line-of-cut free of sawdust for improved visibility.
A Jigsaw will cut curved lines into a variety of materials, including thin metal, laminate, plastic, ceramic tile, and wood. One of the most important features of a good jigsaw is that it should have a solid base and have the capacity to blow out the dust while you are cutting.
Try the DEWALT 20V MAX XR for $178. It has an efficient motor for powerful performance; a variable speed trigger; a 4-position orbital for optimal cutting of a variety of materials; a bright LED light to illuminate dim work surfaces; a keyless blade clamp for easy blade changes, and an integrated dust blower.
A significantly less expensive model to consider is by Black+Decker. It’s a bestseller on Amazon, priced at about $40 – including a 24 pack blade set. The scrolling blades will allow you to intricately cut wood.
The 2-Speed Power Drill
A power drill is an electrical motor that rotates a replaceable drill bit to make holes in wood, plastic, or metal.
Black+Decker 20V MAX Cordless Drill sells for just $50 on Amazon and is one of their best sellers. It comes with a driver kit. This 3-pound baby is ideal for drilling into wood, metal, plastic, and can handle most screw driving tasks.
Sanders for Woodworking
A belt sander, also known as a strip sander, is a tool used to shape and finish wood and other materials. It consists of an electric motor that turns a pair of drums that have a continuous loop of sandpaper mounted on top.
The BUCKTOOL BD4801 Bench Belt Sander is a best seller on Amazon. It has earned 4 1/2 stars and costs $190. This mighty machine has a sturdy cast aluminum base with a rubber foot to prevent vibrations. It also has two dust ports to allow a dust-free operation when connecting with a dust collector.
Three Additional Tools to Have on Hand
Woodworkers use a Vice to hold a workpiece in place. It has two parallel jaws; one of the jaws is fixed and the other is movable by a screw, a lever, or a cam. The vise may be permanently bolted to a bench.
A level, also referred to as a spirit level or a bubble level, will help you to indicate whether a surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). Note: Carpenters, stonemasons, bricklayers, and metalworkers may use different types of spirit levels. I found this one for you – the WORKPRO 3Pcs Spirit Level Set for $20. Check it out here.
Heavy Duty Gloves. Protect precious hands (and manicures) with the DEX FIT Level 5 Cut Resistant Gloves. They are about $12 and come in a variety of colors. Surely, the neighbors will think you look quite cool hanging out in a work shed with these on.
- Assorted screwdrivers
