Walk into any novelty gift shop and you’ll find t-shirts hanging from walls and mugs cluttered on shelves with oh-so-many, silly coffee quotes. Here are some of my favorites:
“How I feel when there’s no coffee? Depresso.”
“Life happens. Coffee helps.”
“‘Be strong,’ I whisper to my coffee.”
Yep, because we love our cup of Joe, we joke about it, dream about it, and sing its praises. The thought of a sweet cafe’ au lait can prevent snooze-pressing at dawn and provide a java jolt at noon. So popular is this drink served hot or on ice, that most everyone has at least one coffee-making option at home. Here are a few explanations and options to help you purchase the right coffee-making-machine for your lifestyle and taste:
Drip. Drip. Drip Machines
Traditionally, drip coffee makers are affordable, durable, come with timers, and work quickly. Depending on the size of the machine, they can make from one to ten cups at a time. One great thing about drip coffee makers is you can get one for real cheap. How does $20 sound? If you answered, “good,” then purchase the Black + Decker 5-Cup Coffeemaker CM0700BZ.
The space-saving design allows you to incorporate this item into your kitchen (that also serves as your laundry room that also serves as your office.) This model has a sneak-a-cup feature (cute name.) That means if you just can’t wait for the entire brew cycle to end and want your dose right away, the flow will politely stop and allow you to neatly pour and replace the carafe to its base. To improve the experience and up the number of cups that can be brewed, check out the more expensive options.
The only con to drip machines is that if the pot sits on the plate for too long, the brew will keep cooking. This will translate into a thicker, more bitter taste.
A thermal coffee maker utilizes a system similar to the drip coffee brewers but has an insulated thermal carafe that will keep the liquid hot without continuing to cook it (thus, no bitterness.) The Motif Elements Pour-Over Style Coffee Brewer was awarded 4 ½ stars on Amazon. For $128.00, it has an 8 cup double-walled stainless steel thermal carafe to keep your coffee at optimal heat for hours plus it has a specially designed showerhead to ensure even saturation of grounds.
Old School Savor
A percolator is a reliable option that consistently delivers hearty flavor. The Presto 6-Cup Stainless-Steel Coffee Percolator will make up to 6 cups and will create that wonderful percolating sound as you salivate. At about $36.00, it’s a purchase that won’t keep you awake. (I mean, it will!)
Despite the “perks” of these machines, many shy away from using percolators because of the many parts to assemble and clean.
A Home Cafe’ Experience
Espresso machines use very high pressure to force the water through very fine grains within a short period of time to ensure good flavor. Coffee drinkers who wish to get creative with their caffeinating routine usually purchase a Nespresso or Lavazza machine which uses pods or ground beans. Economically speaking, this allows for a coffee shop experience at home without shelling out $4+ daily.
The Keurig K-Cafe Coffee Maker is an Amazon choice with a 4 ½ star rating. It has a milk frother, coffee shot capability, and is compatible with all K-cup pods. This model is $157.00.
From Beans to Brew
The most luxurious machines have milk frothers attached plus they grind beans to make espresso and cappuccino. You may be still at the powder-filled pod stage (hey, are those BPA free?) and want to up your coffee experience and start working with fresh beans.
This Gevi model has a Burr grinder built-in to automatically grind beans from coarse to fine as you wish and allow you to select regular or bold flavor. At $150 and with a 5-star rating from Amazon, this seems like a great option for upping your coffee game.
For Really Serious Coffee!
The difference between a dull or fabulous espresso can be a matter of water temperature and pressure. This next machine handles the task well with sophisticated technology:
If you consider the luxury of drinking a great cup of coffee a necessity, take a look at the Saeco Incanto Carafe Super Automatic Espresso Machine. For $950, it will make you a creamy cappuccino or latte macchiato at the touch of a button. It has a detachable milk carafe and a professional disc grinder. This model is easy to maintain and clean and can produce large capacities. (For when the neighbors get whiffs and just “happen to” stop by.)
